Many of us know about the health benefits of adding seaweed to our diets, but did you know seaweed also makes for a nutrient dense body treatment? In fact, one of the best-kept secrets to beautiful skin is the use of sea vegetables.

Look at the menu of most spas around the world, and you will find a seaweed treatment. These facilities know that seaweed is a powerhouse of many vital vitamins and minerals that do amazing things for your skin.

There are many types of sea vegetables you can use, but I’m highlighting one that I’ve fallen in love with – Irish Sea Moss. I have a fabulous Irish sea moss recipe for your skin using this odd-looking sea vegetable, but first, let me tell you why you should give this incredible seaweed a try.

Why sea vegetables?

Although sea veggies look strange (and can feel weird too), they are jam packed with life-sustaining minerals. In fact, it has been called the world’s best skin multivitamin because it consists of 15 of the 18 essential nutrients that make up our bodies.

Impressive Profile

It contains life-essential nutrients such as protein, iron, calcium, sulfur, iodine, beta-carotene, magnesium, bromine, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, pectin, B-vitamins, Vitamin A & K, and Vitamin C. It is also antimicrobial, antiviral and strongly alkalizing. Wow!

Irish Sea Moss Benefits

Helps with the growth of healthy hair, skin, and nails
Prevents premature aging
Plumps the skin
Aids in eliminating mineral deficiencies
Promote healthy cholesterol levels
Detoxify the body of heavy metals and pollutants
Lubricate the digestive tract
Prevents inflammation in joints

Plant-Based Collagen Help

As we get older, our bodies slow down the production of collagen (a naturally occurring protein). I know – it’s sad – but there is nothing we can do about that. We all know that if we don’t have enough collagen, our skin will start to wrinkle, and we notice it on our faces first.

Women all over the world pay a hefty sum to receive collagen treatments to help plump up the skin. Did you know that this sea vegetable has a gelatin-type thickener that helps your body produce natural collagen?

Without the necessary amount of collagen, your joints will lose elasticity too because collagen is the main component of our skin, bone, and connective tissue. But what’s wonderful about sea moss is that it will strengthen the connective tissues in your body, so it’s excellent not only for more youthful skin, hair and nails, it will also help in mobility and agility as we age.

What I love about this seaweed is that has an amazing effect on the skin, especially mature skin. It has regenerative properties, and it will remove dead skin cells – leaving behind taut, fresh, dewy skin. It is plant base, so very suitable for vegans.

When you buy Irish Moss, avoid the powder or flakes because it’s been cooked dry and doesn’t have the great qualities that unprocessed Moss does. It will take a little longer to process the raw kind, but believe me; the benefits far outweigh any minor inconvenience in dealing with it.

How To Use Irish Sea Moss:

1. Rinse your Irish Moss thoroughly a few times to get out any sand or excess salt. Once it is cleaned, you’ll need to soak it for at least 8 – 10 hours in water. You will notice that the moss will change in appearance from a dried-looking product to something that has expanded to twice its size or more.

2. Be sure to periodically check the water level and add more water as needed so the moss is covered while it soaks.

3.  After the moss has soaked for the required amount of time, drain off the water.

4. Blend about 1 1/2 cups of soaked moss with 3/4 cups of water at high speed. Once blended it should have the consistency of applesauce.

5. Pour your moss in a glass bowl and store it in the refrigerator. Once it has congealed, you can use it as a thickening agent in many recipes. This paste can be stored in the refrigerator covered for up to two weeks.

Sea Moss & Honey Body Mask

Now, let’s finally get to my lovely recipe. It’s so easy to make and only has two ingredients!

1.) 1/2 cup of the blended and refrigerated sea moss

2). One tablespoon of raw honey

In a bowl mix together both ingredients and then transfer to a glass bottle for storage. To use, just scoop out about a tablespoon to apply on your clean face. It will have a faint sea smell, but it isn’t overpowering.

Leave the mask on your skin for about 15 minutes, then rinse off thoroughly and follow up with your favorite toner and moisturizer.

This mask can be used all over your body. It is especially good for knees and elbows and other rough areas that you want to exfoliate. Your skin will be left clarified, gently exfoliated and very moisturized. Be careful not to get the mask in your eyes or other delicate areas. I use this mask at least twice weekly. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.

What a fabulous mineral-rich cocktail for your skin. You will absolutely love it!

If you try it, please leave your comments about your experience.
